(Fredericksburg, VA) September 13, 2024 – The City of Fredericksburg will be replacing and upgrading its water meters in your neighborhood. This important upgrade project will begin in some neighborhoods as early as September 16 – while the entire project is expected to take approximately 18 months to reach all of the city’s neighborhoods.

Using Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), the new “smart meters” from Badger Meter allows advanced analytics that will benefit our customers. The new meters will enable the City of Fredericksburg to improve operational efficiencies and provide enhanced customer service, such as notification about potential water leaks on the customer’s side of the meter. Manual readings that now take place with staff driving in neighborhoods will be enabled through wireless technologies remotely. Customers will eventually be able to monitor their own daily usage electronically.

The City’s installation partner, Concord Utility Services (CUS), will implement the meter replacements. Most installations will take place Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays, during regular business hours. Most meters will be switched out in just 30 minutes with minimal disruption to your water service.   Installation of a water meter does require a temporary water service shutoff to perform a meter change. There is no need to schedule an appointment or even be home for the installation.

Customers will be notified pre and post installation of their meter installation. Look for a notification in the mail to find out when Concord Utility Services will be in your neighborhood.
