Fredericksburg, VA, (February 20, 2025)Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) has emerged as a leader in surgical innovation, now holding the highest ratio of Intuitive’s da Vinci 5 (DV5) robotic surgical systems per operating rooms across Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This milestone underscores MWHC’s unwavering commitment to investing in the most advanced medical technology to enhance patient outcomes.

Since the introduction of the DV5 at MWHC in October 2024, the health system has demonstrated measurable improvements in surgical efficiency. Surgeons utilizing the DV5 have achieved a 14.8% reduction in operative time, which translates to less time under anesthesia for patients—improving safety, recovery times, and overall patient experience.

MWHC is also setting a new standard in emergency care by dedicating a DV5 robot exclusively to emergency and trauma cases. This ensures that patients in urgent need of surgical intervention can benefit from the most innovative minimally invasive technology 24/7.

“With the latest advancements in robotic-assisted surgery, we are not only improving patient outcomes but also redefining the future of surgical care in our region,” said Avinash Narayana, DO, FACS, and Chair of Robotics, Mary Washington Healthcare. “Our commitment to technological excellence ensures that our community has access to the safest, most effective surgical options available today.”

Currently, more than 30 highly trained surgeons at MWHC are operating with the DV5 system, offering cutting-edge procedures across multiple specialties, including general surgery, trauma and emergency surgery, urology, gynecology, colorectal surgery, and thoracic surgery. The DV5 surgical platform is available at both Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals. This breadth of expertise further solidifies MWHC’s position as a regional leader in robotic-assisted surgery.

By prioritizing investment in the latest medical innovations, MWHC continues to advance its mission of delivering the highest quality care to patients while setting a new benchmark for surgical excellence.
