(Fredericksburg, VA) November 13, 2024 – On Tuesday, November 12th, Fredericksburg City Council unanimously passed a resolution affirming their continued support for the potential development of data centers in the City of Fredericksburg, outlining goals for pursuing data center development while balancing protection of our natural resources. Council directed City Staff to continue to pursue advanced due diligence studies on the potential development of data centers and to draft potential zoning ordinance provisions which may provide for by-right data center development for parcels generally in the area known as Celebrate Virginia South.
The pursuit of data center development has been ongoing for more than a decade in the region. Council held public meetings in October 2018 and on October 23, 2018 unanimously adopted amendments to City Code to consider a data center as a by-right development usage within specific zoning district classifications, as well as performance standards data centers adhere to. The following year Council again unanimously reduced the personal property tax, in concert with the region, to make the City of Fredericksburg more attractive to this industry.
